OCSC/AAA Driver Improvement Program

If you have been charged in Orange or Chatham counties with failure to stop for a stop sign or red light, a traffic-related crash, speeding repeatedly or speeding more than 20 mph over the legal limit, you may be eligible or required to attend the Orange Safe Communities Driver Improvement Course. Upon successful completion of the course, the District Attorney will reduce or dismiss your citation so you can avoid insurance or driver’s license points.

A portion of the class fees charged by AAA are returned to Safe Communities programs in Orange and Chatham Counties. OCSC uses DIP class fees returned to Orange County to fund the OCSC Minigrant program.

To qualify for the 8-hour Driver Improvement Class, you must:

  • Appear in District Court on the date and time shown on your citation and agree to complete the Driver Improvement Course whereupon you will qualify for your case to be continued for 30 days.
  • REGISTER FOR THE DRIVER IMPROVEMENT COURSE WITH AAA CAROLINAS BY CALLING THE TOLL-FREE NUMBER LISTED BELOW, NO LATER THAN ONE WEEK PRIOR TO CLASS DATE. Pre-registration is a must. Bring official photo identification to class, (drivers license, NC photo ID, college ID, Mexican Consulate official picture ID, work picture ID).
  • Appear in District Court on your appointed court date and present the Driver Improvement Course certificate of completion for a reduction or dismissal of the citation by the District Attorney.

THIS COURSE CAN ONLY BE TAKEN ONCE EVERY THREE YEARS FOR A CITATION DISMISSAL OR REDUCTION IN THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA .

This Course Is Available Online Or In Classroom.

Classroom Course:
The 8-hour Driver Improvement Program is offered Saturdays from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. (dates vary). Call 866-741-6668 to register by phone or you can go to AAA.com/drivingschool to register online.

  • Class locations: Hillsborough or Pittsboro (Spanish classes held in Pittsboro)
  • In-class course fee is $50.
  • Receive certificate at end of course.
  • When calling, please have this information available: drivers’ license number, credit card/debit card number, date of birth, address and phone number(s).

A non-refundable fee of $50 will be billed to your credit card when you register for the course. If you do not have a credit card, you may bring a money order payable to AAA Carolinas the day of the class. An additional fee of $30 will be assessed if you must reschedule for any reason. NOTE: We cannot guarantee you a seat in another class if you fail to attend as scheduled.

Online Course:
Go to AAA.com/drivingschool and click on the online course option. Follow screen instructions to complete course.

  • Course can be completed at your leisure. Our Web site remembers the section you last completed and puts you right back where you left off. You can log in and out as often as you wish.
  • Course takes approximately 6-8 hours to complete.
  • Class fee is $60. (No hidden costs, no fees for books or other expenses.)
  • Certificate will be mailed to your home through regular mail; 3-5 business days. (Note: The certificate delivery option also include express mail or next business day for additional fees.)
  • Your driver’s license number, citation number and credit card number will be necessary for registration and payment.

Impact of the Course:
Reduction or dismissal of a traffic citation will be determined by the District Attorney’s office based on your driving record. Neither the District Attorney’s office, Safe Communities nor AAA Carolinas offer or imply any guarantees regarding future driving privileges, driver license suspension or insurance status. If you have concerns regarding these issues you should consult with your attorney.
